Trump declared victory over Iran, but wants more
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that, in his view, the United States has already achieved victory in its standoff with Iran. At the same time, he emphasized that he is seeking even more tangible results and a stronger position. Despite these statements, the issue of the nuclear threat posed by Tehran remains relevant and is a cause for concern.
This was reported with reference to his interview with Newsmax.
"We have already won, but I want to win by a landslide. We destroyed their navy, we destroyed their air force, we destroyed everything they had—if you look at their anti-aircraft equipment, their radar equipment, their leadership. Their leadership has been destroyed. We destroyed everything," Trump said.
He described Iran as severely weakened both militarily and economically. According to him, due to the damage inflicted, the country may need 20 years to recover, if it is able to do so at all.
At the same time, the U.S. leader emphasized that military achievements alone are not enough, as guarantees are needed that Tehran will not develop nuclear weapons. He added that Iran would use a nuclear weapon if it acquired one.
"In fact, that’s not enough. We need guarantees that they will never have nuclear weapons. I’ll tell you this: Iran would use nuclear weapons if it had them. I deal with these people. I know these people. They will use their nuclear weapons, and we won’t give them a chance to do so," the president said.
He also rejected earlier proposals to supply Iran with nuclear materials for civilian use.
"I wouldn’t approve that. I wouldn’t approve it. I won’t give them anything. Either they’ll have nuclear weapons, or they won’t. And if they do, they’ll be in big trouble," the White House chief stated.
Trump added that Iran is already facing serious economic pressure. In particular, he says that inflation in Iran is approaching 100%, and the country cannot produce oil because the U.S. blockade is working effectively.
He also said that the international reaction has generally been positive, but at the same time criticized allies for not taking more decisive action. Furthermore, NATO has not provided substantial assistance.
"Actually, I think what I’m doing is very popular. The world thanks me because I shouldn’t be the one doing this. Other presidents should have done this long before me, and other countries should have done this... NATO hasn’t helped us at all," Trump concluded.
