Pentagon officials were shocked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks regarding a possible reduction in U.S. troop levels in Germany. The statement sparked concern and surprise among military leaders.

According to the publication’s source, Trump’s statements should be taken seriously, as it cannot be ruled out that this time he might actually follow through on his words. Inside the Pentagon itself, according to journalists, officials have begun to wonder whether the president truly intends to carry out the threats he has voiced.
According to three Pentagon officials, Trump’s social media post was the first time many had heard of a potential new attempt to withdraw hundreds, if not thousands, of U.S. troops from Germany.
“(The Pentagon—ed.) did not expect this and had not planned any troop reductions. But we must take him seriously, because he took this seriously during his first presidential term,” said an aide to one of the congressmen.
This refers, in particular, to Trump’s July 2020 order to withdraw 12,000 U.S. troops from Germany, which was never carried out.
Politico added that while Trump’s previous threats were unsuccessful, during his second term he has intensified his anti-European rhetoric, moving from threats to withdraw from NATO due to allies’ refusal to join the war against Iran to warnings that he might seize Greenland.
