Trump imposed a 50% tariff on some goods from Canada
U.S. President Donald Trump signed three executive orders imposing 50% tariffs on certain categories of Canadian imports. The new restrictions will supplement existing trade measures on goods from Canada.
The White House attributed the decision to “Canada’s discriminatory treatment of U.S. products.”
“In this way, President Trump is offsetting the burden and disadvantage that U.S. trade has faced as a result of Canada’s discriminatory treatment, and is leveling the playing field for key U.S. export goods—automobiles, alcohol, and dairy products,” the statement said.
The tariffs will apply to Canadian wine, hockey sticks, and construction cement. At the same time, the tariffs will not apply to energy resources, potash fertilizers, fish, and critical minerals. However, some products that were previously exempt from tariffs under the trade agreement between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico—the USMCA—will be subject to the restrictions.
The new measures will supplement existing U.S. trade restrictions on imports from Canada.
