Trump faces Republican criticism over beef imports
US President Donald Trump has faced criticism from members of the Republican Party after deciding to temporarily suspend higher tariffs on imported beef. According to The Guardian World, the United States is to import up to 300,000 metric tons of foreign beef without applying higher tariffs in order to reduce food prices.
Republican criticism
Some Republicans from states with developed livestock farming said that increased imports could harm American farmers. Wyoming Senator John Barrasso stressed that Americans want to see American-produced beef on their tables, not foreign imports. According to him, livestock producers need a fair market so that it is easier for them to provide the country with food.
Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, the Republican Party candidate in the US Senate election in Iowa, supported efforts to reduce prices but said she does not consider beef imports to be the right way to achieve this. In an interview with Fox News, she said American cattle ranchers should be given the opportunity to expand their herds, although this requires time and resources.

Trump’s and senators’ positions
Trump said his administration had obtained commitments to sell imported beef at prices 25% lower than current market prices. According to him, this should reduce Americans’ expenses while allowing the US cattle herd to grow again.
Nebraska Senator Pete Ricketts said that short-term policy changes are not a long-term solution to the problem. In his view, flooding the market with lower-quality imported beef harms the interests of Nebraska farmers and ranchers, who should instead be allowed to expand their herds and meet consumer demand.
Montana Senator Tim Sheehy said that throughout the year he had advised Trump not to take this course. He acknowledged the president’s intention to reduce prices for Americans but believes this decision will make it harder for American ranchers to rebuild their herds.
