Three pro-European parties in Romania have nominated their candidate for prime minister — Digi24

On Friday, the three center-right parties of Romania’s ruling coalition nominated European Parliament member Siegfried Mureșan as their candidate for prime minister amid an ongoing government crisis.

Pro-European forces are seeking to stabilize the political situation in the country and avoid early parliamentary elections.

The political standoff in the country has been ongoing for several weeks, significantly hindering important financial and defense reforms.

Romania has been in a state of political uncertainty for several weeks now, after the Social Democrats’ withdrawal from the coalition led to the resignation of Ilie Bolojan’s pro-European government.

This move by the left-wing parties completely disrupted the previous balance of power in the legislature and triggered a systemic governance crisis.

Since then, President Nicușor Dan has nominated two candidates for prime minister, neither of whom was able to secure the necessary support among lawmakers.

It remains unclear whether the candidate from the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Save Romania Union (USR), and the Hungarian minority party UDMR—Siegfried Mureșan—will be able to secure enough votes to form a government.

The center-right coalition currently lacks a stable single-party majority, forcing it to seek compromises with other political parties.

For their part, the Social Democrats (PSD) are proposing that a representative of their party, Sorin Grindeanu, become prime minister, refusing to support other candidates.

This was reported by Digi24.
