Trump found himself in an awkward situation because of a bad joke

U.S. President Donald Trump found himself in the spotlight after speaking at the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota. During his speech, he made an ill-advised joke about himself and his sons, and his words drew surprise and laughter from the audience.

U.S. President Donald Trump found himself in a curious situation during his speech at the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota. While discussing the nation’s highest military honor, he made an ill-advised joke about himself and his sons—Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. In his speech, Trump recounted the history of the Medal of Honor—the United States’ highest military decoration. He noted that only two pairs of fathers and sons had ever been awarded this honor. One of them was Theodore Roosevelt and his son Theodore Roosevelt Jr., and the other was General Arthur MacArthur and his son Douglas MacArthur.

The president then moved on to a joke about his own family. He said that, looking at his sons in the hall, he, too, would like to award one medal to himself and two to them. It was at this point that he uttered a phrase which, due to its unfortunate wording, took on an ambiguous meaning and elicited a loud reaction from the audience. “With the exception of Arthur and Douglas MacArthur… they are the only father-and-son pair to have received our country’s highest military award for courage that goes beyond the call of duty. Now, when I look at my two wonderful sons sitting over there, I think I’ll give one medal to myself and two to them, and we’ll have a ‘triple,’ ” Trump said.

After laughter and surprised exclamations filled the room, the president quickly realized that his words had come across as ambiguous. He immediately tried to steer the conversation in a different direction and stated that he would then award only one of his sons. “Okay, I’ll choose one of the two. I’ll present them with the Congressional Medal of Honor for something related to their brilliant hunting, and I’ll get another one for the fact that they stood up to Russia, Russia, Russia, or something like that, and now we’ll have a third pair,” the president added, emphasizing that it was just a joke.

At the same time, it’s worth noting that neither Donald Trump nor his sons have served in the military, so his remarks about awarding the highest military honor were purely in jest. The speech quickly became a topic of discussion on social media. Users focused specifically on the president’s awkward phrasing, which became the most notable moment of his speech. Trump himself did not comment on the situation separately after the event concluded.

According to financial reports filed with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, 2025 was a record-breaking year financially for U.S. President Donald Trump.
