The Holy Fire ceremony in Jerusalem will be held behind closed doors

The Holy Fire ceremony in Jerusalem will be held behind closed doors

This year, the ceremony marking the descent of the Holy Fire in Jerusalem will be held behind closed doors for security reasons. Israeli police explained that the decision was made to ensure order and safety during the religious event.

This was reported with reference to a statement from the Israeli police press service.

The decision was made following a meeting between law enforcement officials and the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa.

"During the meeting, it was decided that current conditions do not allow for mass gatherings," the statement from Israeli law enforcement said.

The agency also notes that since the start of Israel’s military operation against Iran, many sites traditionally visited by pilgrims have been closed.

It is noted that over the past two weeks, several rocket shells and fragments of intercepted missiles have fallen near and at some holy sites.

"The danger is real. The primary goal shared by all parties—both the police and religious leaders—is, above all, the protection of human life," the Israeli police emphasized.

How the ceremony takes place

On the eve of Easter, all lights are extinguished in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre: oil lamps, candles, and chandeliers. After that, in the morning, clergy from various Christian churches inspect and seal the Edicule—the very place where, according to tradition, Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

After the ceremony concludes, the procession begins. The Patriarch of Jerusalem enters the Edicule to pray. Before doing so, he is thoroughly checked to ensure that no external flame has entered the interior.

When the Holy Fire descends, the Patriarch carries 33 lit candles out of the Holy Sepulchre—a symbol of Jesus Christ’s age at the time of his crucifixion. Representatives of seven Christian denominations gather near the church each year to witness this miracle, and they later carry the Holy Fire back to their respective countries.
