Fuel prices in Europe surge sharply — The Local Sweden
Fuel prices have risen sharply across European countries: as of September 22, petrol and diesel in several states cost more than €2 per litre. The Local Sweden attributes the increase to disruptions in global oil supplies amid the war in the Middle East. Governments in different countries are introducing or discussing tax relief, but their approaches to curbing prices differ.
Record prices in France and Switzerland
In Switzerland, diesel reached a record 2.41 francs, or €2.56, per litre on September 18. Grade 95 petrol cost 2.10 francs, or €2.23. Swiss authorities do not regulate prices, as they are set by private distributors and petrol station operators.
In France, the average diesel price reached €2.41 per litre, SP98 petrol cost €2.27, and SP95-E10 cost €2.17. According to official data, 16% of nearly 10,000 French petrol stations experienced shortages of at least one type of fuel. Against the backdrop of rising prices, fishermen blocked oil depots last week.
Tax measures in other countries
In Germany, in mid-September E10 cost an average of about €2.31 per litre, while diesel cost €2.47. The federal government plans to restore a fuel tax reduction from October, which is expected to reduce the price by up to 17 cents per litre including VAT. From January 2027, the country also plans to introduce price caps for suppliers.

In Austria, on September 21, a litre of Eurosuper 95 cost €1.925 on average, while diesel cost €2.238. A temporary programme provides for a 1.9-cent-per-litre reduction in the mineral oil tax until the end of September. In Italy, petrol cost between €2.139 and €2.194 per litre, while diesel ranged from €2.313 to €2.368.
In Sweden, on September 22, the average petrol price was 17.59 kronor, or €1.57 per litre, while diesel cost 22.86 kronor, or €2.03. The temporary fuel tax cut is set to end in two stages: prices may rise by 1 krona from October 1 and by another 3 kronor from December 1.
In Spain, the average petrol price was €1.926 per litre, while diesel cost €1.933. In Norway, in mid-September diesel cost between €2.20 and €2.70 per litre; the temporary reduction in fuel taxes ended there on September 1.
