Turkey criticizes US decision to extend arms embargo waiver for Greek Cypriots

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has criticized the United States’ decision to extend for another year the waiver of the arms embargo for the Greek Cypriot administration. As Anadolu Agency reports, Washington extended the validity of this decision until September 30, 2027.

Ankara’s position

Turkey’s foreign ministry said that it shares the position of the Foreign Ministry of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on this issue.

Ankara called for avoiding steps that, in its assessment, could further undermine trust between the two sides on the island. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry also said that the Greek Cypriot side is increasing pressure on Turkish Cypriots in various areas, whom Ankara described as co-owners of the island.

Security statements

The ministry also claims that the intensification of the Greek Cypriot side’s armament activities harms regional stability. The statement noted that Turkey would protect the legitimate rights and interests of Turkish Cypriots and ensure their security under all circumstances.

Turkey also stated its intention to resolutely continue efforts to ensure that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus takes its rightful place in the international community, in Ankara’s wording.
