Turkey has called for preventing a war in the Black Sea

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Ankara does not want the war to spread to the Black Sea. According to him, security in this region is extremely important, and attacks on civilian ships, ports, and tankers are unacceptable.

During his visit to Kyiv, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that his country is categorically opposed to the spread of hostilities to the Black Sea. According to Fidan, stability in the Black Sea is of great importance not only for the countries of the region but also for international security. That is why Turkey is calling for further escalation to be prevented.

Ankara insists on preserving peace

The Turkish foreign minister emphasized that Ankara’s position remains unchanged. “As we have always stated: we categorically do not want the war to spread to the Black Sea. Maintaining peace in the Black Sea is a prerequisite,” said Hakan Fidan.

He also drew attention to the situation regarding civilian shipping. According to the minister, attacks on ports, tankers, and fishing vessels pose a danger to civilians and cannot be justified. “Targeted attacks on ports, tankers, and fishing vessels that endanger the lives of civilians are unacceptable,” he emphasized.

Turkey called on all parties to act responsibly

Fidan stressed that the current situation requires restraint from all parties to the conflict. “All parties must act prudently and responsibly,” the Turkish foreign minister stated.

Ankara has repeatedly emphasized that it is committed to maintaining security in the Black Sea, as this region is of strategic importance for international trade, shipping, and food security.

Fidan’s Visit to Ukraine

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously announced that Hakan Fidan is on an official visit to Ukraine on July 15–16. During the trip, he is holding talks with Ukrainian officials and participating in meetings focused on security issues, bilateral cooperation, and the situation surrounding Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The Turkish foreign minister’s previous visit to Ukraine took place in late May 2025. This time, one of the key topics of discussion was the security situation in the Black Sea, which Ankara calls one of the most important factors for stability in the region. He made this statement at a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga.

The NATO PURL initiative has been in place for one year. During this time, 29 countries have joined the program, and total contributions have reached $6.7 billion. Thanks to this mechanism, Ukraine is receiving critically important weapons, including most of the interceptors for the Patriot systems.
