Turkish F-16s have taken up NATO air defense duty in Romania

Turkey deployed two F-16 fighter jets to participate in NATO’s integrated air and missile defense operations in Romanian airspace. An early warning radar aircraft and an aerial refueling aircraft were also deployed for the mission.

 

The Turkish military’s participation in NATO operations was announced on August 27 during a briefing by the Turkish Ministry of National Defense. According to the ministry, on that day the Turkish Air Force deployed two F-16 fighter jets, an AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) aircraft, and an aerial refueling aircraft.

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense explained that the aircraft are participating in NATO’s integrated air and missile defense exercises in Romanian airspace. “Today, August 27, the Turkish Air Force is participating in NATO’s integrated air and missile defense exercises, deploying two F-16 fighter jets, one airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, and one refueling aircraft,” the Turkish Ministry of Defense reported.

Thus, the mission involves more than just fighter jets. The AEW&C aircraft helps monitor the air situation and coordinate air operations, while the refueling aircraft allows the fighter jets to remain airborne longer. The Turkish Ministry of Defense also reported on training activities in the Black Sea. On August 25, a training flight took place there involving Turkish combat and support aircraft.

Turkey will also participate in aviation events in the Romanian capital. On August 28 and 29, the Turkish aerobatic team Türk Yıldızları (“Turkish Stars”) will perform demonstration flights during the International Air Show in Bucharest. The involvement of Turkish aircraft in NATO air defense exercises comes amid heightened attention to the security of the Alliance’s eastern flank airspace. Romania has access to the Black Sea and shares a border with Ukraine, where a full-scale war with Russia is ongoing.
