A tourist from Poland died in the mountains of Slovakia

A Polish tourist died while hiking in the mountains of Slovakia after falling behind her group and going missing. Rescuers searched for the woman, but her body was later found in a deep ravine near a waterfall. The tragedy occurred on one of the popular hiking trails in Slovak Paradise, which is known for its narrow gorges, ladders, and suspension bridges. This was reported by RMF24.

According to the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service, the 67-year-old Polish citizen was part of a hiking group traversing the Piečki Gorge. On the morning of May 29, the woman fell behind the rest of the group. According to preliminary reports, she did not dare to continue on the more difficult part of the route, where hikers must navigate open metal ladders and narrow suspension bridges over cliffs.

After that, contact with the tourist was lost. When it became clear that the woman had not returned to the group and was not responding, a search operation was launched.

Nine members of the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service set out to search for the tourist. Rescuers surveyed the route the group had taken, as well as adjacent sections of the gorge and hard-to-reach areas where the woman might have ended up. The search lasted several hours.

Eventually, the rescuers made a tragic discovery. The tourist’s body was found in a steep gorge near the Great Waterfall—one of the region’s most famous natural landmarks. Law enforcement and relevant agencies are currently investigating the circumstances of her death.

The Piešťany Gorge is part of the Slovak Paradise National Park, which is visited by tens of thousands of tourists from various countries every year. The trails here are considered picturesque but also quite challenging. Many paths pass through narrow rocky passages, wooden walkways, metal ladders, and bridges over streams and waterfalls.

That is why rescuers regularly remind tourists of the need to assess their abilities before setting out on a route and not to stray from the group while navigating difficult sections.

The mountain rescue service emphasizes that even popular hiking trails can pose a serious danger, especially for people without sufficient physical fitness or experience navigating challenging terrain. Experts advise checking weather conditions before a hike, keeping a phone charged, informing loved ones of your route, and not venturing alone on difficult sections of the trail. This is especially true for routes with steep ascents, narrow passages, and high-altitude structures, where even a single mistake can have fatal consequences.

Slovak law enforcement and rescue services are currently investigating the circumstances of the tragedy. The official cause of death has not yet been determined. At the same time, this incident serves as yet another reminder that even well-known hiking trails in the mountains require the utmost attention, caution, and strict adherence to safety rules.
