The Lithuanian foreign minister's data fell into the hands of hackers
The Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that his personal data and information about his family were stolen during a large-scale data breach of the state registry. Authorities in Vilnius suspect that hostile entities may be behind the attack. The incident is currently under investigation, according to LRT.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys reported that during the recent breach at the country’s Registry Center, not only official databases were compromised, but also his personal information and data on his family members stored in state registries.
According to the minister, the situation is cause for serious concern, as this is not merely a technical glitch or accidental loss of information, but a possible targeted theft of large volumes of data that could potentially be used to influence the country’s security situation. “Yes, and also data on my family members. The data contained in the registry,” Budris confirmed, responding to journalists’ questions.
He also noted that, according to estimates by relevant agencies, the stolen data may have fallen into the hands of hostile actors, which only heightens concerns about the possible consequences of the incident. “According to agency estimates, this data was stolen and is now in the hands of hostile actors,” the minister emphasized.
The leak became public last week, and, according to preliminary investigation data, more than 600,000 records may have been illegally copied from state registries, with the perpetrators focusing primarily on real estate and legal entity registries, which may indicate an attempt to gain access to the country’s sensitive economic information.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene officially stated that her own family was among the hundreds of thousands of citizens whose confidential information was compromised as a result of a massive leak from the country’s state registries.
