In Austria, there have been calls to buy back Stefan Zweig's villa from Porsche's co-owner

A public campaign has been launched in Austria calling for the purchase of writer Stefan Zweig’s historic villa in Salzburg, which is currently owned by Porsche co-owner Wolfgang Porsche.

The 17th-century house, where Zweig lived until 1934 and wrote a significant portion of his works, has been put up for sale for 12.7 million euros. Porsche previously purchased it for 8.4 million euros.

Thousands of people have already signed a petition calling for the villa to be transferred to state ownership. The petition’s organizers propose opening the house to the public as a cultural and memorial site.

Bernhard Fügenhug, rector of the University of Salzburg, stated that the university is prepared to temporarily acquire the building until the necessary funding is secured. According to him, Austria has a moral obligation to preserve Stefan Zweig’s legacy.

Previously, Wolfgang Porsche found himself at the center of a public outcry over plans to build a private tunnel to the villa for his car collection.
