Tusk Criticized Morawiecki Over the Idea of a Referendum on Schengen
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reacted sharply to a proposal by his political opponent Mateusz Morawiecki to hold a referendum on the possible suspension of the country’s membership in the Schengen Area. Tusk called the idea absurd.
Mateusz Morawiecki’s “Development Plus” parliamentary group presented its migration policy principles. These include, in particular, the creation of a Ministry of Migration and Assimilation, the establishment of a deportation service, unconditional assimilation, and the introduction of measures to encourage Polish emigrants to return home.
During Tuesday’s press conference, the idea of holding a referendum on temporarily suspending Poland’s participation in the Schengen Area was also raised. According to “Development Plus,” such a step would strengthen Poles’ sense of security.
“No, I don’t believe it. Does that mean something happened to him? Did something happen to him? No, there definitely won’t be a referendum on Schengen… He’s lost his mind,” Tusk commented.
The Polish prime minister also criticized the idea of creating a deportation service.
“This is absolutely shameless. It’s an attempt to follow the American example, but in my opinion, that’s not the best example,” Tusk said.
He added that in Poland, the migration problem ended with Mateusz Morawiecki’s administration.
This was reported by Onet.
Tusk stated that a wanted former Polish official is in hiding in Tiraspol.
Tusk is concerned about the crisis within the rival Law and Justice party.
The split in the party was the result of a prolonged internal conflict, which escalated after Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jarosław Kaczyński issued an ultimatum. As a result of their refusal to sign an oath of allegiance to the party leadership, more than thirty members of parliament left the opposition party, forming a group centered around Morawiecki. This stripped PiS of its status as the largest parliamentary faction, handing the lead to Donald Tusk’s coalition.
