Tusk called on Poles to keep their emotions in check in their relations with Ukraine

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke about future relations with Ukraine and urged his country’s citizens to avoid excessive emotionalism on this issue.

According to him, it is important to continue the dialogue between the countries and to address complex historical issues, particularly the Volhynia tragedy. Tusk noted that he expects Ukrainians to reexamine this aspect of history, while emphasizing the need to maintain constructive relations between Poland and Ukraine.

He announced that on Saturday, the anniversary of the Volhynia tragedy, he will issue a statement regarding the Polish-Ukrainian dispute over the UPA.

“On the eve of the anniversary, I would like to appeal to all decent, wise, and responsible Ukrainians. Remember that this great European community is built on truth, and truth is an absolutely essential foundation for reconciliation. Therefore, I am counting on a reevaluation from the Ukrainian side, but I also call on everyone in Poland to exercise restraint and avoid excessive emotions,” Tusk said.

Responding to a question during a press conference in Oseki Lęborskie (Pomeranian Voivodeship) about the meeting between the presidents of Poland and Ukraine, Tusk emphasized that he views the very fact of the meeting between Navrotsky and Zelenskyy very positively. According to him, “the Russians would be overjoyed if a serious crisis were to arise in Polish-Ukrainian relations.”

The prime minister acknowledged that he had not received any information from the Presidential Palace regarding the course of the conversation.

“But the signals that both presidents are sending publicly indicate that, at the very least, they both clearly realize that this crisis has gone too far and is harming both Poland and Ukraine,” the head of the Polish government stated.

This was reported by PAP.

Tusk stated that Ukraine is seeking ways to ease tensions with Poland.

Earlier, Poland described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s introduction of a bill to establish a National Pantheon as “actions of an escalatory nature.” Kyiv’s decision sparked a political reaction in Warsaw.

Poland has launched the official process of establishing a permanent U.S. military base on its territory. The government has already adopted a resolution to this effect, and the defense minister has been authorized to negotiate with the U.S. side and prepare the necessary infrastructure.

More than a thousand U.S. service members are leaving Lithuania following the completion of a scheduled rotation. At the same time, the timing of the next contingent’s arrival and its size remain undetermined, the country’s defense minister stated.
