The United Kingdom has temporarily banned the sale of disposable barbecues in stores and online nationwide. Authorities took this step due to concerns that they could cause wildfires and pose a danger amid prolonged heat and drought.
The UK Department for Business, Innovation, Science, and Trade stated that disposable barbecues “cannot be considered a safe product” under current conditions and “should not be sold either in stores or online.” The government will issue instructions regarding the sales ban to all retailers.
Andy Burnham stated that some of the wildfires still burning across the country were caused by disposable barbecues. “We currently have 37 fires across England and Wales, four of which are serious incidents… Britain is like a powder keg right now. Lighting a fire outdoors under any circumstances poses a threat to other people’s homes; it’s a threat to other people’s lives—please don’t do it, please don’t do it,” he urged the public.
The country is facing increasingly extreme conditions, such as heat waves, droughts, and wildfires, all fueled by climate change.
