The Deputy Minister of Defense has resigned in the UK
El Carnes, the UK’s Deputy Minister of Defense for the Armed Forces, has resigned, following in the footsteps of Defense Secretary John Healey. The decision is part of a series of personnel changes at the UK Ministry of Defense.
The deputy minister explained that he is resigning due to disagreement with the government’s plans regarding defense spending—a reason also cited by Defense Secretary John Healey in his statement.
In his letter to the prime minister, Carns stated that the government’s defense investment plan was “neither transformative enough nor adequately funded” to meet the challenges facing Britain.
"As a Marine, I have seen what war looks like today. I have spoken with those who have seen it up close in Ukraine. The lesson is stark and clear. The nature of conflict is changing faster than our procurement can keep up with it. We are still buying weapons suitable for the last war, while our adversaries are arming themselves for the next one," the deputy minister stated.
"I have devoted all my time in government to proving this. Downing Street is not listening to me, so I am resigning as Deputy Minister for the Armed Forces," Carns wrote.
The official announced this on Platform X on Thursday evening.
