Swastika painted on a mosque in Brussels, Belgium

In Laeken, a district of Brussels, the capital of Belgium, a mosque was painted with a swastika late on Saturday evening. Brussels Minister for Local Government and Equal Opportunities Ahmed Laaouej called the incident an Islamophobic act. This was reported by Anadolu Agency.

Police report

The Nazi symbol was discovered at around 1:00 a.m. local time, or 11:00 p.m. GMT. Police were notified about the incident and are preparing an official report. Authorities are to conduct an investigation and identify those involved in painting the mosque.

Officials’ reaction

Laaouej visited the mosque together with Khalid Zian, a representative of Brussels municipal authorities responsible for religious affairs. They expressed solidarity with the mosque community and its worshippers. Laaouej condemned the incident, called the presence of the Nazi symbol particularly serious, and stressed the need to identify those responsible.
