Montenegro detains mercenary who fought in Ukraine

The State Prosecutor’s Office of Podgorica, Montenegro’s capital, has ordered the 72-hour detention of 61-year-old Danko Savić on suspicion of participating in Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine. During a search, authorities found over 12 kilograms of explosives and 33 firearms.

This was reported by the Balkan service of Radio Free Europe.

Savić was arrested on 27 November for allegedly taking part in the war against Ukraine from early 2023 until early 2025 as part of a “Russian Federation armed formation in Luhansk.”

Montenegrin police added that as a result of his activities, he “received and gained substantial sums of money, including €1,500,000 in a current account.”

During the search, conducted as part of a months-long operation, authorities also discovered passports under different names and other military equipment.

According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Savić is a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina but resides in the Montenegrin town of Danilovgrad. He previously served in the Yugoslav army and later declared himself a “Cossack military commander” in the Balkan Cossack Army, which is reportedly affiliated with the “Central Cossack Host” of Russia, close to Putin.
