In Israel, 295 people were injured in road accidents during Yom Kippur in 2025 — an average of 12 people per hour. The statistics included people who required medical assistance after incidents involving bicycles, e-bikes, electric scooters, roller skates, hoverboards and cars, The Jerusalem Post reports.
Accident statistics
The data were released by the road safety organization Green Light based on information from the Magen David Adom service. According to its calculations, 2,472 people were injured in similar road accidents during Yom Kippur over the past decade.
Over ten years, six people died in road accidents on this day, including two in 2025. Among the cases mentioned by the publication is the death of 12-year-old Barak Houri, who was hit by a driver in 2021 while riding a bicycle on Route 4 near Givat Shmuel. In 2019, a car hit eight-year-old Itay Margi in Tel Aviv, who was also riding a bicycle.

Risks on empty roads
Green Light stressed that reduced traffic does not eliminate danger: riders of two-wheeled transport can fall, collide with pedestrians or other road users, or encounter emergency vehicles. In some areas, including the south of the country and parts of Jerusalem, traffic also continues.
The organization advised reducing speed at intersections, not assuming roads are completely empty, choosing safe routes for children away from major roads, and checking the technical condition of bicycles. Other recommendations include using helmets, reflective elements and lights after dark. In Israel, children under 16 are prohibited from riding e-bikes and electric scooters. Those who are fasting are also advised to refrain from travel.
