Limassol to host Laou Laou mobility week — Cyprus Mail
Limassol, Cyprus, will host European Mobility Week from September 16 to 22 under the local name Laou Laou. The programme, dedicated to the theme “Mobility for All”, includes discussions, cycling events, road safety activities and a car-free day on Gladstonos Street, Cyprus Mail reports.
Laou Laou is a common Cypriot expression meaning “slowly”, “gently”, “without haste”. The initiative raises questions about the accessibility of urban space and mobility opportunities for people who use public transport, bicycles, wheelchairs or do not have a car.
Discussion on an inclusive city
On September 18, from 18:00 to 20:00, Friends of the Earth Cyprus will hold a panel discussion titled “Creating an Inclusive City” at the Molos amphitheatre. The discussion is expected to combine the perspectives of transport engineering, architecture, urban planning and civil society representatives, as well as the experience of moving around the city on a daily basis.
The key question of the discussion will be whom the city is designed for. The week’s programme will also address transport poverty, mobility justice, accessibility, public spaces and urban design.

Car-free day
On September 20, part of Gladstonos Street will be closed to cars as part of Car-Free Day – Laou Laou. For several hours, a space usually used for vehicle traffic and parking will become a place for walking, cycling, games, workshops, music, conversations and local businesses.
The day’s programme includes activities for children and families, cycling events and road safety sessions, creative workshops, a sustainable mobility exhibition and public discussions. Free bus options and drinking water refill stations will also be available to access the event.
On September 22, the week is planned to conclude with a screening of the short artistic documentary In Motion, dedicated to the everyday mobility experiences of Limassol residents. The event is jointly organised by the Limassol municipality, the Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company, Friends of the Earth Cyprus and OPU.
