In Jeddah, maritime defense coalition moves to active deployment — Asharq Al-Awsat

The multinational maritime defense coalition held its fourth planning meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The conference marked the coalition’s transition from the formation stage to active deployment after achieving initial operational capability (IOC), Asharq Al-Awsat reports.

Meeting participants

The event took place at the Western Fleet Command in Jeddah. It was attended by 154 naval commanders, operational planners, ambassadors and European Union representatives from 41 allied and partner countries.

The delegations discussed the integration of defense assets, the identification of operational requirements and the preparation of forces for joint missions in the designated area of responsibility. They also addressed operational phases, accession to the coalition charter and participating states’ commitments to provide capabilities.

Coordination and shipping security

Currently, 28 liaison officers are coordinating multinational efforts within a unified command structure. The coalition confirmed that protecting international shipping, maritime corridors and strategic straits is a shared global priority.

Participants stressed the importance of integrated capabilities, real-time intelligence sharing and compliance with international maritime law to counter emerging threats.
