The EU will discuss sanctions against Russia next week

Issues related to Ukraine, including the intensification of sanctions against Russia, will be discussed at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. The meeting will take place next week in Luxembourg.

This was announced by European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper at a briefing in Brussels, according to aUkrinform correspondent.

“Work on sanctions will continue as usual,” the spokesperson said, refraining from “speculation regarding the positions of individual member states, particularly Hungary,” on this issue.

She noted that sanctions remain a priority for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kallas.

Commenting on the U.S. decision not to extend the easing of sanctions on Russian oil, European Commission Chief Spokesperson Paula Pinya said: “We believe that any easing of sanctions against Russia at this point will not help maintain pressure on Russia.”

She also noted that Russia is benefiting from the war in the Middle East.

“As for our own sanctions package, it remains on the negotiating table, and we hope to make progress based on the same logic as the previous 19 sanctions packages, with the aim of reducing any possibility for Russia to continue benefiting from the continuation of this horrific war, where attacks on Ukraine show no signs of stopping,” Pinho said.

When asked whether the EU would wait for a G7 decision on a complete ban on maritime transport for Russian shadow fleet tankers before acting on its own, the spokesperson reiterated the position that sanctions involving more countries would have a greater impact, so that would be “ideal,” but even without broader international support, the EU “will consider how to proceed.”

Ukraine and a number of countries have supported the EU’s new sanctions against Russia.
