One of Europe's largest corn mazes has opened
One of the largest corn mazes in Europe has opened in the Hungarian town of Kiszombor. This year, it has been designed in a fairy-tale style—a castle, a unicorn, and characters from famous stories have appeared in the field.
Visitors are invited to walk a route about 2.5 kilometers long, but finding the exit won’t be easy. The organizers expect the maze to once again become one of the region’s most popular summer attractions.
In the Hungarian town of Kisombor, near the border with Romania, one of Europe’s largest corn mazes has opened. This year, it covers an area of 4.5 hectares, and its design is inspired by fairy tales. Silhouettes of a castle, a unicorn, and fairy-tale characters have been carved out of the tall corn.
The maze route stretches for about 2.5 kilometers. Although the paths seem simple, visitors will encounter plenty of turns, dead ends, and unexpected routes. The organizers themselves joke that it’s a giant natural scavenger hunt where you not only have to keep moving forward but also navigate your way through.
The history of this unusual attraction began back in 2008. Since then, the maze has been created every summer by volunteers from the local history and local lore club, Kiss Mária Hortensia. At first, the idea was quite simple—to draw tourists’ attention to a small town that was gradually losing its population. Over the years, the project has become one of the region’s most famous seasonal attractions.
The club and project leader, Erzsébet Endrész, explained that the main goal remains the same—to make Kiszombor better known not only in Hungary but also beyond its borders. “We want people to come here for new experiences. For us, this maze is a huge natural ‘escape room’ where you not only have to find the right path but also enjoy the journey itself,” she explained.
Every year, the maze attracts about two to three thousand visitors. Many come here with their entire families. In addition to navigating the maze, guests can participate in traditional games of skill and other outdoor activities.
The organizers note that they change the maze’s theme every year, so even those who have already been to Kisombor can discover a new route and a new storyline each time. This year’s fairy-tale maze will be open until August 22. Thousands of tourists from various regions of Hungary and neighboring countries are expected to visit during this time.
Corn mazes like this have become increasingly popular in Europe in recent years. They combine outdoor recreation, family fun, and elements of a scavenger hunt, making them appealing to both children and adults. For many tourists, this is an opportunity to spend a few hours outdoors and test their attention, quick thinking, and ability to find their way out of even the most challenging routes.
