The United Kingdom has commented on Iran's threats
The United Kingdom has stated that it will not allow Iran to intimidate it with threats. Officials in London emphasized that they are prepared to respond to any possible attacks but will not participate in U.S. offensive military operations against Iran.
British Defense Minister Wes Streeting stated that London will not give in to threats from Iran. According to him, the country is ready to defend itself and its allies in the event of any attacks. Last week, Iranian authorities declared that the United Kingdom is a “legitimate target” due to its support for U.S. and Israeli actions against Tehran.
Commenting on these statements, Streating noted that Britain must not allow itself to be intimidated by such rhetoric. “We are prepared to respond to any attacks Iran might launch against our country or our allies. And we will remain prepared to do so,” the minister said.
At the same time, he emphasized that London is not participating and does not plan to participate in U.S. offensive military operations against Iran. “We have not joined and will not join U.S. offensive military operations in Iran. On this issue, our positions differ from those of the United States,” Stretting emphasized.
According to him, the United Kingdom has allowed the U.S. military to use British bases solely for defensive operations. This refers to facilities where U.S. military personnel and aircraft are stationed. At the same time, London fully supports ensuring the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. “When it comes to the freedom of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, our positions are fully aligned,” the defense minister noted.
Streeting also announced that he plans to meet with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagsett next week. According to him, the parties will discuss further cooperation between the two countries. In addition, the United Kingdom has declared its readiness to lead an international naval mission to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz as soon as the necessary conditions are in place.
The minister emphasized that safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is of great importance to the global economy. A significant portion of the world’s oil supplies passes through this route, so any threats in the region could affect energy prices and the cost of living in many countries. He made these remarks in an interview with the BBC.
As a reminder, the EU has authorized the seizure and sale of Russian oil from tankers that violate sanctions.
The EU is suspending adjustments to the price cap on Russian oil.
