In Finland, Disaster Management program becomes one of the most competitive
In Finland, the Disaster Management program at the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences Xamk has become one of the most competitive during the autumn joint application round. There were 36 applicants per place who listed it as their first priority, and about 46 people per place overall, YLE News reports.
Demand for security-related programs
A first-priority applicant is considered a person who placed the program first on their own list. Nearly 400 people applied for the Disaster Management program at Xamk both this year and last year.
The university describes the program as practice-oriented higher education in the social and health care sector. It provides practical skills in crisis and disaster management using technology, management approaches and interdisciplinary cooperation.
Xamk lecturer Antti Jakkonen linked the interest in the studies to the growing importance of issues such as crises, security, disasters and preparedness. According to him, a significant share of the program's applicants are from abroad.

Other popular programs
Another popular program was training for social services professionals in the correctional sector at Laurea University of Applied Sciences. Nearly 800 people applied: fewer than 40 candidates per place overall and 15 first-priority applicants per place. At the same time, the number of applicants for this program decreased compared with the previous year.
Laurea's security and risk management programs, as well as its security management program, also drew interest, with around 10 people applying per place for each. Programs training social services professionals and business specialists received the most applications overall. The blended-format business program at Haaga-Helia received 1,475 applications, while Laurea's online social services program received 1,241.
The autumn joint application round for universities and institutions of applied higher education ended on September 10. A total of 12,100 places were available. Each applicant could choose up to six programs and rank them according to their own priorities, while the results were to be announced no later than November 19.
