Prices for used sailboats in Finland have halved in ten years — YLE News
In Finland, prices for used sailboats up to 10 meters long have fallen by about half over the past ten years. Sailboats measuring 7–9 meters are most often sold on the secondary market for around €4,000, YLE News reports.
Data from Nettivene.com, Finland's largest online marketplace for used boats, show that a 36-year-old sailboat measuring 8.3 meters, which could have cost around €20,000 ten years ago, is now usually sold for less than €10,000. Prices for boats around 10 meters long, designed for a small family, have decreased by almost a third over the decade — their typical price exceeds €20,000.
The market is aging
One reason for the price decline is the aging of boats put up for sale. In summer, most used sailboats sold were more than 30 years old, while around one fifth were over 50 years old. The share of boats under 20 years old was less than one tenth.

The median age of sold used sailboats now slightly exceeds 40 years, while the median price is €6,500. Last year, the median age of such boats was 41 years. Sailboats under 20 years old have a median price of around €50,000, whereas for vessels more than 40 years old it does not reach €5,000.
There are almost no new boats
According to Finland's transport authority Traficom, 12 new sailboats were registered in the country this year. Trade picked up during the pandemic years, but even then only around two dozen new vessels were registered annually. In Finland, sailboats longer than 5.5 meters are subject to mandatory registration.
About 1,700 sailboats are sold on the secondary market each year. In 2020, their number approached 2,000, while last year it stood at around 1,500. By the end of July this year, slightly fewer than one thousand sailboats had been sold, while the median price of completed transactions fell by around 20% compared with the corresponding period last year.
