Estonian ambassador to the US presents credentials to Trump
Estonia’s Ambassador to the United States, Hannes Hanso, presented his credentials to US President Donald Trump on Tuesday during a ceremony at the White House in Washington. Along with Estonia’s representative, ambassadors from 13 other countries also presented their documents to the US head of state, ERR News reports.
Ceremony in the Oval Office
According to Hanso, before the official part of the event, the ambassadors gathered at Blair House opposite the White House. From there, they were taken to the White House and briefed on the procedure in the Oval Office, where Trump was waiting for them.
The chief of protocol introduced the Estonian diplomat to the president, after which Hanso approached Trump. The ambassador said that the credentials had been drawn up in Estonian, as is customary. During a brief conversation, he told Trump that he had arrived from Estonia, which the president knows as a country of digital technologies.
According to Hanso, Trump is familiar with Estonia’s digital achievements. After shaking hands, the president opened the credentials, and the ambassador asked whether he wanted to read them in Estonian.

Security and economic cooperation
Hanso also received a written response from Trump. In it, the US president emphasized shared values and freedoms, the importance of transatlantic relations and security cooperation, and positively assessed relations between Estonia and the United States. The letter also referred to entrepreneurship, business, and growing prosperity.
Before the ceremony, the ambassador held a number of meetings with senior officials of the US administration. He said that he raised the issue of a Ukraine recovery conference that Estonia is organizing on its territory, as well as a memorandum of understanding on critical rare earth elements, which the country seeks to sign with the US administration.
After the official ceremony, Hanso spoke, among others, with the US deputy secretary of state responsible for Europe and Eurasia. The ambassador noted that his posting to Washington is to end in 2031. Among his main tasks, he named supporting security relations with the United States, developing economic cooperation, and working with the Estonian community in the country, which numbers more than 30,000 people of Estonian descent.
