A war-damaged multi-storey residential building collapsed in Gaza City, Palestine. According to BBC News World, at least 20 people were killed, including five children. Dozens more people remain missing under the rubble.

Searches under the rubble

The building was located in the Tal al-Hawa district of Gaza City. Video from the scene shows rescuers searching for bodies and possible survivors among the debris of the multi-storey building, whose floors had collapsed onto one another.

Local residents said that about ten families had been living in the apartments despite warnings about the building's dangerous condition.

Rescuers' work and airstrikes

Representatives of the Hamas-controlled civil defence service said they initially worked without equipment because of strict Israeli restrictions on bringing equipment into Gaza. Later, rescuers managed to borrow heavy machinery.

On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed at least five Palestinians, including two children and a Hamas commander, medics and Hamas sources said. The Israeli military said it had killed a Hamas commander in southern Gaza and another fighter in the north. In both cases, the death of a child was also reported.

British charity Medical Aid for Palestinians said that an Israeli drone killed a patient at a medical centre it supports in Jabalia, in northern Gaza.
