China installs first steel box girder segment of Shuangyumen Bridge — ECNS

On September 15, the first steel box girder segment of the Shuangyumen Bridge superstructure was installed in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. The operation marked the start of steel girder installation on the sea bridge, ECNS reports.

Structure specifications

The Shuangyumen Bridge is part of the second phase of the Liuheng Highway Bridge project in Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. The project has a total length of 18.78 kilometers. It is intended to connect the islands of Liuheng, Fodu and Meishan.

The bridge's main span reaches 1,768 meters. According to ECNS, it is the largest span in China among sea bridges of this type, while the structure itself is the world's largest single-span suspension bridge to use steel box girders in its design.

The steel box girder structure will consist of 100 segments with a total weight of more than 30,000 tonnes. The first installed element is 18 meters long, 40.5 meters wide and 3.5 meters high. It weighs 336.7 tonnes.

Installation near the shipping channel

The segment was installed near the main shipping channel. Due to tidal conditions, only a four-hour window was available for the operation.

Before work began, maritime services inspected the floating crane, tugboats and patrol vessels. During the installation, a system integrating patrol boats, drones and a dispatch center was used to monitor safety.

Port transport connections

The second phase of the Liuheng Bridge project is intended to strengthen the transport network of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port and support the development of Zhejiang Province's marine economy.
