In France, a Ukrainian man is accused of arson that led to the death of a fellow countryman
In France, a 49-year-old Ukrainian citizen has been charged and placed in pretrial detention in connection with an arson case. Another Ukrainian national died as a result of the incident; investigators are currently determining the circumstances of the event.
The Bordeaux prosecutor’s office reported this on Friday, according to Le Figaro.
On Tuesday, May 12, a fire destroyed a house that was undergoing renovation.
A 49-year-old Ukrainian man was charged and taken into custody for arson, which resulted in the death of his compatriot.
On Tuesday afternoon, when firefighters responded to a call at a single-story house located in a residential area of the city, they discovered “a charred body on the first floor,” said prosecutor Renaud Goduel.
“The man’s identity is being determined, but he is likely a Ukrainian who worked in the building,” he said. A second worker, also a Ukrainian, who was present at the scene and was intoxicated, was detained and taken into custody “given the discrepancies between his statements and the testimonies of neighbors who were also present,” the prosecutor added.
The man has been formally charged with arson resulting in death and has been remanded in custody pending trial. He denies the charges. According to the preliminary investigation, work was being carried out on the house and a farm building on the property by three Ukrainian workers. The third worker has not yet been found, added Renaud Godule.
