France has set the dates for the 2027 presidential election

France has finalized the schedule for the 2027 presidential election. The first round of voting is scheduled for April 18, and the second round is set to take place on May 2.

The French government is expected to officially approve the dates for the first and second rounds of the presidential election at a meeting on Wednesday.

Two options were under consideration: holding the elections on April 11 and 25, or postponing them by one week. Ultimately, the government opted for the second option.

This limited room for maneuver is due to restrictions set by the French Constitution.

The 1958 Constitution stipulates that presidential elections must be held between twenty and thirty-five days before “the end of the incumbent president’s term of office.” It is impossible to exceed this timeframe: the second round had to take place no later than midnight on May 14, 2027—the date marking the end of Emmanuel Macron’s second five-year term, which began five years ago, May 14, 2022, writes Le Figaro.
