In France, a volunteer firefighter is suspected of setting fire to the historic Fontainebleau Forest
In France, law enforcement officials arrested six people in connection with a massive wildfire that engulfed 2,000 hectares of the historic Fontainebleau Forest, located 60 kilometers southeast of Paris. Among those detained was an 18-year-old volunteer firefighter suspected of directly causing this devastating blaze.
According to the French prosecutor’s office, during his initial interrogation, the young man admitted to setting the branches on fire using gasoline and a lighter, but later recanted his statement. An official investigation has now been launched against the young man, and he has been taken into custody pending a full investigation into the circumstances.
The devastating fire caused serious infrastructure problems and posed a threat to the population: about 1,000 local residents were forced to evacuate, and the A6 highway, which connects the capital to the southeast, was closed. The fire has now been contained, but efforts to extinguish isolated hot spots are ongoing amid intense heat.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported that this summer’s high temperatures are significantly complicating the situation. Since the beginning of the year, 32,000 hectares of land have already been burned in the country, exceeding the total losses for the entire 2025 fire season.
