France has reported that Russia is carrying out information attacks against potential presidential candidates

France has reported two suspected disinformation campaigns linked to Russia. The targets were MEP Raphaël Glucksmann and the mayor of Le Havre, former French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, who are considered potential candidates in the 2027 presidential election.

Raphaël Glucksmann reported that the French General Secretariat for Defense and National Security had warned him about a disinformation campaign linked to the group Storm1516.

According to him, the aim of the operation is to spread false information to discredit politicians whom the Kremlin considers unfriendly.

In particular, fake stories were circulated online alleging that Glucksmann’s wife had attempted to bribe French media outlets to improve his image ahead of the election. The attackers also used forged documents and passed off fake publications as articles by well-known French journalists.

Previously, a similar campaign was directed against Édouard Philippe—at that time, false information about his health was circulated online. The French agency Viginum links the Storm1516 group to more than 200 disinformation operations carried out in Europe since 2023.
