Gagauzia has refused to endorse the government's resolution on the elections

Gagauzia has refused to endorse the government's resolution on the elections

The Executive Committee of Gagauzia rejected a resolution on holding elections to the local parliament, which had been drafted by the central government of Moldova. Representatives of the autonomous region did not support the proposed document regarding the organization and conduct of elections to the local legislative body.

On June 9, the Executive Committee of Gagauzia unanimously rejected the resolution on holding elections for deputies to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, arguing that it contradicts the legislation of Moldova and the region.

The session began with an address by the region’s former head, Yevgenia Gutsul, who is serving a prison sentence in Chisinau following a conviction for the illegal financing of the “Shor” party.

Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee Ilya Uzun accused Chisinau of “creating chaos” through amendments to Moldova’s Electoral Code of 2022 and stated that “open and transparent discussions” in consultation with the region.

Earlier, the Appeals Chamber of the Moldovan Court of Cassation suspended the decision of the Gagauzia People’s Assembly to hold local elections on June 21.

The crisis surrounding the elections in Gagauzia has been ongoing for over a year. The term of the current People’s Assembly has expired, but new elections have not been organized.

The elections were initially scheduled for November 16, 2025, but were later rescheduled for March 22, 2026. However, the court overturned the decision regarding the composition of the electoral body, making it impossible to hold the elections.

This situation is further exacerbated by discrepancies between the autonomy’s legislation and national electoral regulations. Although Gagauz legislation uses the term “Central Election Commission,” Moldova’s new Electoral Code uses the term “Central Election Council.”

Because of this discrepancy, the courts have ruled several decisions of the People’s Assembly unlawful, and the electoral body remains incomplete.

Chisinau insists on harmonizing the legislation and argues that the rules for organizing elections in the autonomous region must align with the national system.

Comrat, on the other hand, insists that the autonomous region must retain the right to independently establish its own electoral body and organize elections based on the law regarding its special status.
