Ghana launches third phase of Appiatse reconstruction — MyJoyOnline

In the Appiatse community in Ghana, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah launched construction works under the third phase of the reconstruction project. As MyJoyOnline reports, the new stage plans to build 69 housing units for the remaining affected households.

The reconstruction project was launched after the explosion in Appiatse on January 20, 2022. It killed and injured people, destroyed property, and forced community residents to leave their homes.

Housing for affected families

According to Buah, 124 housing units have already been handed over under the first phase. During the second phase, 50 households received compensation. The third phase is expected to provide housing for the remaining affected families.

Project consultant at AESL Basil Akushi specified that the plan includes the construction of 17 one-bedroom, 23 two-bedroom, 14 three-bedroom, 12 four-bedroom, one five-bedroom, and two six-bedroom homes. According to him, procurement procedures have already advanced significantly, and the work is planned to be completed within a year.

Construction oversight

The minister said that the project’s initial design had been revised to take into account the needs and feedback of housing recipients. He called on contractors, consultants, and the technical team to ensure quality work, and also stressed the need for construction monitoring and community participation.

Buah also called for transparent and accountable management of resources, including donated materials. Member of Parliament for Prestea-Huni Valley Robert Wisdom Cudjoe advised residents to submit complaints through the local project implementation committee. He also called on Maxam to fulfill its insurance and compensation obligations to people who suffered injuries or lost property and livelihoods as a result of the explosion.
