In Accra, Ghana, police detained two men on suspicion of attempting to offer a law enforcement officer a bribe of 30,000 Ghanaian cedis. According to police, the money was offered to secure the return of a truck and substances that officers suspect are narcotics. This was reported by MyJoyOnline, citing the Greater Accra Police.

Truck stopped near Achimota

According to police, on September 11, 2026, officers from the Bravo SWAT unit, acting on operational intelligence, intercepted a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GN 5581-13 in the Abofo area near Achimota. Law enforcement officials said the vehicle was travelling from Kpandai and may have been transporting and distributing narcotic substances in Accra.

Police said the truck's passengers fled after allegedly spotting officers, leaving behind the vehicle and its contents. During a search, police said they found 175 compressed bricks of dried leaves suspected to be a narcotic substance. The cargo was allegedly concealed in three sacks and three Ghana Must Go bags.

Suspects claimed ownership

The truck and the seized substances were taken to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation. Later, Mark Bangel, a trader from Kpandai in the Oti Region, and Zakaria Arafat, who identified himself as a mechanic and said he lives in Kpando in the Volta Region, arrived there.

According to police, the men claimed ownership of the truck and the seized substances, then offered the Bravo SWAT commander 30,000 Ghanaian cedis for their return. Both men were detained, and the money, which police consider the subject of an alleged bribe, was seized.

During further investigation, police said, the detainees mentioned a man named Salam, who allegedly drove the truck from Kpandai to Accra. Police said they are taking steps to locate him. The two detainees are cooperating with the investigation, while the truck and seized substances remain evidence. These allegations against them have not yet been tested in court.
