In the city of Kumasi, Ghana, construction of the second phase of the Kejetia Central Market redevelopment project is planned to resume in October 2026. Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi announced this at a meeting with traders and the minister responsible for local government, traditional institutions and religious affairs.

As MyJoyOnline reports, the authorities held talks with the project’s contractors and consultants. According to the mayor, funding has been secured for the further completion of the work.

Procurement is 84% complete, engineering work is 99% complete, and construction work is 49% complete.

Market stalls and a transport terminal

The second phase is intended to complement the existing Kejetia complex with modern commercial and auxiliary facilities. The plan provides for more than 3,760 market stalls, a transport terminal for 600 vehicles, and more than 6,000 lockable commercial spaces.

Since the project began, €171 million has been paid out. According to the mayor, after the first phase of the market was commissioned in 2018, the assembly collected 89 million Ghanaian cedis from it. He also assured that the authorities intend to complete the second and third phases of the project and urged traders not to transfer money to individuals or organizations allegedly collecting payments for future market spaces.
