Ghana to host fair of U.S. universities — MyJoyOnline
An EducationUSA fair is planned in the Ghanaian cities of Kumasi and Accra, where 26 accredited U.S. colleges and universities will provide prospective students with information on admissions, tuition costs, scholarships, student visas and academic programs. MyJoyOnline reports.
Visitors will be able to speak directly with representatives of educational institutions and ask questions about admission requirements, study programs, testing and financial aid. Education and Cultural Affairs Attaché Donya Eldridge stressed that participants do not need to have the highest test scores or an already completed application.
The fair is open to applicants for undergraduate and postgraduate programs, as well as parents, school counselors and professionals considering master's or doctoral studies.
Universities and visa consultations
Participating institutions include Harvard University, Tufts University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Rice University, Northeastern University, Temple University and the University of Vermont. Educational Testing Service will also be represented at the event and will answer questions about educational testing.
EducationUSA adviser Bernice Afotey explained that meeting university representatives does not mean immediate admission. Admission to U.S. higher education institutions involves a comprehensive review of an application, as well as the submission of a formal application and academic documents.

Consular officers will give presentations and answer questions about the U.S. student visa procedure. Eldridge also advised asking institution representatives about the cost of specific programs and available financial support, including not only academic but also athletic scholarships.
Fair schedule
In Kumasi, the fair is scheduled for Thursday, September 24: the session for undergraduate applicants will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, while the session for master's and doctoral candidates will run from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In Accra, the event will be held on Friday at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel: the undergraduate session will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and the session for people who already have a first higher education degree will run from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Organizers advise registering in advance, although registration will also be available on site. Participants who register in advance will be able to check in at the venue by giving their name. Additional application consultations are available at EducationUSA centers in Accra and Kumasi.
According to Eldridge, Ghana ranks 14th in the world and second among sub-Saharan African countries after Nigeria by the number of students the country sends to study in the United States.
