Trader in Ghana fined for selling counterfeit Amuzu Bitters
The Asokwa Second Circuit Court in Kumasi, Ghana, fined 53-year-old trader Jinys Mensa 12,000 Ghanaian cedis for dealing in counterfeit Amuzu Bitters and trademark counterfeiting. The woman pleaded guilty to both charges, MyJoyOnline reports.
Court ruling
The court, presided over by Vida Achiaa Yeboah, found Mensa guilty based on her plea. According to the outlet, she was sentenced to a fine of 1,000 penalty units, amounting to 12,000 Ghanaian cedis.
If she fails to pay the fine, the woman faces up to two months in prison with hard labour. The source also noted that the two charges carried alternative prison terms of two weeks and two months respectively, and the court ordered that they be served concurrently.

Product seizure
According to the prosecution, several months ago the management of Amuzu Bitters Company received information that Mensa was selling a counterfeit version of the product and subsequently launched its own investigation. On February 4, 2026, at around 14:20, a company representative and another employee went to the trader's shop in the Ashtown area and found boxes containing products suspected of being counterfeit.
After a report was made to the Mankranta police, Mensa was arrested. Police seized 45 boxes, each containing 12 bottles of Amuzu Bitters with counterfeit Ghana Revenue Authority tax stamps and trademark labels.
Samples of the original and seized products were sent to the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Food and Drugs Authority for examination. According to police, both institutions confirmed that the tax stamps and labels were counterfeit. In a statement to investigators, Mensa admitted that the goods belonged to her and said she had received them from a man she could identify, but did not provide information to trace him.
