Iranian lawmaker warns of risk of global conflict spreading

In Iran, member of parliament Kamran Ghazanfari said that the region is “practically on the verge of World War III.” As The Jerusalem Post reports, he linked the risk of a large-scale conflict to Russia’s war against Ukraine, tensions between major powers, and disputes between the United States and China over Taiwan.

War in Europe and Taiwan

According to Iran International, on September 9, Ghazanfari, who represents Tehran in parliament, spoke about this in an interview with the official Iranian Labour News Agency, ILNA. He said that NATO’s support for Ukraine in the war with Russia, as well as Moscow’s tensions with the United Kingdom and Germany, increase the likelihood of the conflict spreading to other European countries.

The politician also called the dispute between the United States and China over Taiwan another possible flashpoint for a broad international conflict. The Jerusalem Post writes that Iran is seeking to position itself alongside countries advocating a new world order, while Tehran considers weakening U.S. influence and pushing the United States out of the Middle East to be among its key goals.

Possible withdrawal from the NPT

In the interview, Ghazanfari also raised the issue of Iran’s possible withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. According to him, this issue may again appear on parliament’s agenda.

Earlier, the lawmaker criticized the prospect of an agreement with the United States. According to Iran International, he claimed that the United States had allegedly threatened Iran and members of its negotiating team during two months of talks, and that an agreement reached under such conditions would not be valid under international law.

Ghazanfari also claimed without providing evidence that the United States and Israel were allegedly preparing a large-scale operation and could be planning to seize Iranian islands in the country’s south. The publication recalls that he had previously claimed that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was allegedly killed by Israel and its allies in 2024.
