Four police officers honored in Ghana after operation against armed gang

In the city of Wa, Ghana, Regional Minister Charles Lwanga Puozuing honored four police officers for an operation against a group that, according to law enforcement, was involved in armed attacks in the Wa West District and the Wa Municipality. The awards were received by Sergeants Moti Kwame Divine and Salifu Ishmael, as well as Corporals Ernest Amiyaw and John Bekara Vitus.

According to MyJoyOnline, the officers acted under the leadership of the Wa District Police Command, gathering intelligence, conducting surveillance, and carrying out operational activities. Police said the group was linked to attacks in Nyoli, Kulmasi, Ga, Penatengu, Kulpari, Daposi, Gadi, and Toksi.

Detention of suspects

According to police, the most recently recorded attack took place on August 1, 2026, at the Penateng junction. Law enforcement said the victim sustained serious machete injuries after resisting.

On August 8 and 9, police detained six suspects. One of them, 52-year-old Nasiru Abdul Rahman, was killed during the operation. Police said the suspects are before the court.

According to investigators, the attackers inflicted machete wounds on victims and forced them to disclose PIN codes for mobile money transfer services. The funds were then allegedly transferred to an account linked to the deceased suspect. Police estimated the victims' losses at 22,070 Ghanaian cedis in cash and 3,274 cedis through forced mobile transfers; seven mobile phones were also stolen.

Promotions and regional award

Police continue to search for two people: 30-year-old Haruna, who is believed to be the group's armorer, and 24-year-old Hamidu Mohamadu, the son of the deceased suspect.

On August 12, the four police officers were promoted in rank at a special ceremony at police headquarters. The Regional Security Council decided to additionally honor them at the regional level. Puozuing said the distinction signifies not only recognition but also greater responsibility, emphasizing the need for the responsible use of police powers in the public interest.
