Ghana announces creation of 71,000 places in senior high schools
In Ghana, the government has created about 71,000 additional places in the senior high school (SHS) system by allowing private institutions to admit graduates of the BECE basic education examination. This was stated by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, MyJoyOnline reports.
Admission to private schools
According to the minister, these places emerged as a result of reforms by the current government and were not inherited from the previous administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Iddrisu named allowing private senior high schools to enroll BECE graduates as one of the measures introduced.
The minister noted that this expanded opportunities for students who might otherwise have found it difficult to secure a place in public senior high schools. He also stated that this practice was not used under NPP rule.

Appeal regarding payments
Private senior high schools participating in the initiative have appealed to the government regarding payments for accommodating admitted students. According to Iddrisu, the institutions are asking for funding to be provided through the Ministry of Finance after they admitted BECE graduates under the new mechanism.
The statement came amid concerns over student enrollment through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). The minister described the involvement of private institutions as part of broader reforms to the enrollment process, which do not rely solely on available places in public schools.
