Ghana detains MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah — MyJoyOnline

Ghana has detained Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, a Member of Parliament for Manhyia South. He voluntarily arrived at Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, after which he was detained.

As MyJoyOnline reports, EOCO said that the MP is cooperating with investigators. The agency noted that the prescribed investigative and operational procedures were carried out in relation to him before the detention.

Subject of the investigation

According to EOCO, the investigation concerns suspicions of criminal conspiracy, causing financial losses to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax offences and other episodes. Baffour Awuah is also a senior partner at the law firm Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners.

EOCO said it would continue the investigation professionally, independently and in accordance with due process of law. The agency also urged the public not to draw premature conclusions regarding the possible guilt of any of those involved. The allegations against the MP remain under investigation and have not been established by a court.

Previous detention attempt

On September 23, EOCO officers attempted to detain the MP at the High Court in Accra as part of the same investigation. According to a source, he resisted, calling the law enforcement officers’ actions an unlawful detention and an attempted abduction, and later sought protection from Parliament.

EOCO had previously said that it invited Baffour Awuah twice in February 2026 to assist the investigation, but he did not act on those invitations. The MP disputed this account, stating that the February correspondence concerned his former position as a senior partner at the law firm and its representation of SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited.
