28 bales of used diapers destroyed in Ghana — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) intercepted and burned 28 bales of used and low-quality diapers. The shipment was found in a 40-foot container and destroyed in Shai Hills as part of the FDA’s nationwide efforts to remove substandard childcare products from the market.

Risks to children’s health

As MyJoyOnline reports, the Consumer Protection Agency supported the FDA’s actions. Nana Prempeh Okyereabour Aduhene, executive director of the mediation and arbitration agency, said this was an important step to protect infants and consumers from potentially dangerous products.

The FDA noted that such diapers are usually transported in loose packaging. During transportation, they may be exposed to moisture, dust and pests. According to the authority, these conditions may promote the growth of harmful fungi and bacteria and pose health risks to infants.

Attempts to conceal shipments

The FDA also said its investigations had uncovered attempts by some traders to evade controls at ports. According to the regulator, containers with prohibited goods were declared as ordinary paper.

The FDA warned that importers of prohibited products face legal and regulatory sanctions and must bear the costs of safely disposing of the shipments themselves. Nana Prempeh Okyereabour Aduhene urged consumers not to buy childcare products whose safety and quality cannot be verified, and to choose products that have undergone regulatory inspection and are registered with the FDA.
