Protests erupt in Honduras over fuel price hike — Anadolu Agency

Protests and road blockades took place in Honduras following another nationwide increase in fuel prices. Demonstrations were reported in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Villanueva and other parts of the country, Anadolu Agency reports.

Road blockades

According to the newspaper El Heraldo, participants in the demonstrations blocked streets and highways and burned tires. They demanded an end to fuel price increases. In particular, road blockades were reported on routes connecting Tegucigalpa with the southern and eastern parts of the country.

The latest adjustment marked the eleventh consecutive weekly increase in fuel prices in Honduras. Protesters called on the authorities to take measures to curb fuel costs, pointing to the impact of more expensive fuel on transport expenses and household costs.

Prices and subsidies

In the capital, a gallon of premium gasoline rose by 4.87 lempiras to 153.17 lempiras, or $5.71. Regular gasoline increased by 2.45 lempiras per gallon to 135.26 lempiras, or $5.04.

This week, the government increased the temporary fuel subsidy from 65% to 70% due to rising international prices. According to the Energy Secretariat, this did not prevent further price increases for consumers. The price of household liquefied gas remained unchanged thanks to the temporary subsidy, while automotive liquefied gas became more expensive.

Honduras' Institute of Land Transport stated that representative transport organizations had not announced a nationwide strike. Industry representatives confirmed their readiness to continue dialogue with the authorities and expressed concern over rising operating costs.
