20 people were shot dead at a palm oil plantation in Honduras — Reuters
In Honduras, armed assailants killed at least 20 people at an African palm plantation in the north of the country.
This was reported by Reuters.
Authorities are investigating the possibility of a territorial dispute between criminal groups and a struggle for influence. This incident has become one of the bloodiest attacks in the region in recent times.
The tragedy occurred in the Bajo Aguán region, located on the northern coast of the Caribbean Sea in Honduras.
The attackers opened fire near a local church just as the plant’s employees were about to start their workday. Law enforcement officers quickly cordoned off the scene and began collecting evidence.
Local police officially confirmed the number of victims and launched a large-scale investigation. Deputy Commissioner Jasser Ramos told TN5 television that 20 bodies had been found.
According to him, the dead included 15 men, three women, and two minors.
Investigators are currently determining the detailed circumstances and exact motives behind this brutal crime.
Authorities have not specified the motive, but Security Minister Gerzon Velásquez stated that initial evidence points to “disputes between criminal groups” over spheres of influence in the region.
Search operations are currently underway to apprehend those responsible for the shooting.
The region has long had a reputation as a crime-ridden area due to conflicts over resources.
This area has long been marked by violent land disputes, drug trafficking routes, and the expansion of African palm cultivation.
The high profitability of this agricultural sector consistently attracts local criminal clans.
