Vucic hinted at a possible resignation amid protests in Serbia
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has stated that he may resign in the near future.
The Serbian leader made this statement during a visit to China amid large-scale protests in Belgrade, according to N1 TV.
“I may resign soon,” Vucic said.
At the same time, the Serbian president downplayed the significance of the protests that took place in the country’s capital last Saturday.
According to Vučić, such rallies do not pose a serious threat to him, as they are allegedly “empty” and lack a clear purpose.
“Such gatherings cannot seriously trouble me, especially when they lack well-thought-out content, are empty, and not particularly numerous,” the Serbian president stated.
Vucic also blamed the organizers of the rally for the incidents that followed the protests.
He announced that the ruling Serbian Progressive Party will hold a meeting on June 26–28 to discuss the situation in the country and the protesters’ demands.
Aleksandar Vučić has led Serbia since 2017. In 2022, he was re-elected to a second presidential term, which ends in 2027.
Earlier this month, Vučić announced that parliamentary elections would be held in the fall—tentatively between late September and mid-November.
In addition, Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić stated that the Serbian Progressive Party plans to nominate Vučić as a candidate for prime minister after the upcoming elections.
Prior to this, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced his intention to hold early parliamentary elections. According to him, the vote could take place between late September and mid-November.
