A 17-year-old Irishman died from an electric shock in the shower in Greece

On the Greek island of Kimolos, 17-year-old Irishman Alex McKee died from an electric shock while taking a shower at a vacation home. The tragedy occurred on August 9, less than three days after his family arrived on the island, according to The Guardian.

According to the publication, the teenager died instantly when he picked up the showerhead in the bathroom, which was described as being located outdoors and rudimentarily equipped. Agapitos Xanthis, a doctor on Kimolos, told Greek television that the boy’s mother also felt a similar electric shock when she called out to him. The doctor advised her to immediately turn off the main power supply.

Alex McKee’s body was transported to mainland Greece. An autopsy performed at a hospital in Piraeus determined that the cause of death was electrocution.

Greek police have focused their investigation on the home’s water heater and a possible electrical wiring malfunction. Access to the house has been restricted, and an independent expert has been called in to inspect the wiring. According to the police, they are also investigating the possibility that the electrical panel may not have had a protective device.

Law enforcement officials are also examining the electrical installation certificate, which was signed in 2024 by Kimolos Mayor Konstantinos Vendouris, an electrician by trade. The victim’s family has stated their intention to seek criminal charges. Their attorney, Stelios Voudouris, said in an interview with Open TV that, in his opinion, the mayor bears significant criminal responsibility.
